In Cotignac, the history of the quince is passed down through family recipes. According to some accounts, this fruit, known as “coudoun” in Provençal, may have given its name to the village, “Coutigna”, and to its famous quince preserve, “Coutignat”. Tradition has it that, in 1660, Louis XIV and Anne of Austria were presented with quince jams, jellies and paste during their visit. Over the centuries, Cotignac’s quinces have earned a fine reputation, particularly among Provençal confectioners. Still grown in the surrounding area, they are harvested in autumn.
Founded in 1998, the Comité du Coing helps preserve quince cultivation and its accompanying traditions. Each year, the Quince Festival celebrates this culinary heritage, bringing residents and visitors together for tastings and activities.
